Why: May is Mental Health Awareness month, so the district is bringing together student services staff and community mental health providers to raise awareness of students’ mental health needs, build capacity of staff to respond, and increase collaboration between schools and mental health providers.
How: The day includes a panel discussion, including community mental health providers, a former student, and a parent with experience interacting with the system of care. Student services staff (school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, school nurses and dropout prevention teachers) and community mental health staff then will plan together ways to enhance services to support student mental health needs in school. Topics covered in the sessions will include eating disorders, anxiety, school-based violence prevention, trauma reduction and supporting recovery, non-suicidal self-injury, and connecting mental health services.
