Land O’ Lakes, FL – (September 29, 2017) -- Sunlake High School’s Advanced Placement Human Geography students will participate in The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team to identify buildings and streets on maps of Puerto Rico.
Teacher Anne Cullison was one of 50 teachers who participated in the American Geographical Society teacher fellowship program last spring, where she learned about humanitarian mapping. Up-to-date maps are a critical resource when relief organizations are responding to disasters or political crises.
Cullison’s two classes on Monday and Tuesday will take place in a computer lab where students will work on the maps. The first class each day runs from 12:10 p.m. to 1 p.m. and the second class runs from 1:05 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. This is a way for students to directly help recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, where so many local families have loved ones.
