Wesley Chapel, FL – (September 27, 2017) – New River Elementary school finished first in Florida’s and has been named “Best in the State” in the 2017 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge for recording 5,536,782 independent reading minutes from May 8, to September 7, 2017.
In addition to being the top Florida school, New River Elementary ranked second in the United States. The school has shown consistent improvement in independent reading minutes. Last year, the school’s students logged more than 2,000,000 minutes, which earned them second place in Florida and top 10 in the United States. In fact, every year since 2014, New River Elementary students have more than doubled their independent reading minutes.
“I am really impressed with our students’ performance,” said Lynn Pabst, New River Elementary School principal. “Even though our school schedule was disrupted by Hurricane Irma, students continued to read and log their minutes. Our school is proud to continue prioritizing independent reading throughout the school year.”
Scholastic plans to feature New River Elementary in their 2018 Book of World Records, and the school will be sent a plaque and celebration kit. There will be an on-campus student celebration on Friday, October 6, where students will be rewarded with Kona Ice for “shaving” off their summer to become better readers. About the Summer Reading Challenge: The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is designed to help kids turn the “summer slide”—the learning loss which can occur over the summer months—into a “summer leap” by discovering the power and joy of reading for fun. The program offered kids the chance to log their reading minutes to earn digital prizes as they completed weekly reading challenges, gaining access to 18 reading activities, including games, quizzes and videos based on popular children’s books. Parents and families also had access to free summer reading resources, including booklists across all age groups in both English and Spanish.
