Land O’ Lakes, FL – (October 22, 2014) – Pasco County Schools’ PLACE before- and after-school enrichment program will hold its third annual Lights on Afterschool event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, at the Sims Park Amphitheater in New Port Richey.
Each October, one-million Americans and more than 7,500 communities nationwide celebrate the afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families. This year’s celebration will include testimonials and endorsements by invited guests who will speak about their support and encouragement for quality afterschool programming. Speakers include State Representative Amanda Hickman-Murphy, who will present a special tribute on behalf of the Florida House of Representatives; New Port Richey Councilman Bill Phillips; West Pasco Chamber of Commerce President Henry G. “Chip” Wichmanowski; and Cpt. James D. Steffens from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division.
Activities will be kicked off with a parade of PLACE program students and colors presented by the Anclote High School Army JROTC, under the direction of Command Sgt. Maj. Royal and Sgt. Maj. Placeres. PLACE students will showcase their talents, with additional entertainment by Giving Tree music. There also will be carnival type games/activities for children along with a student art exhibit. Refreshments will be available for purchase to support local high school clubs and organizations.
The benefits of quality afterschool programs are clear:
They support working families by ensuring that children are safe and productive when the school day ends.
They make our communities stronger by involving students, parents, business leaders, and volunteers.
They give children the opportunity to discover hidden talents as they grow academically and socially.
Pasco Learning and Activity Centers of Enrichment – PLACE - has been providing this quality afterschool programming in Pasco County Schools since 1990.
The public is invited to join in this free celebration and show their support for safe, quality afterschool programs. Sims Park is located in the heart of downtown New Port Richey, along Main Street and the Pithlachascotee River. For additional information contact Karla Graziano at 813-794-2483.
