Who: Wiregrass Ranch High School students, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, The Spring, and Sunrise of Pasco County
What: Get Loud!
When: 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, during the Wiregrass Ranch vs. Sunlake boys basketball game
Where: Wiregrass Ranch High School, 2909 Mansfield Blvd., Wesley Chapel
Why: Every 9 seconds in the United States, a woman is assaulted or beaten. Wiregrass Ranch High School students organized this event to raise awareness about power-based violence (including domestic violence and sexual assault).
How: During the Wiregrass Ranch vs. Sunlake boys basketball game, the students and fans will remain silent until Wiregrass Ranch scores their ninth point. At that point, the gym will erupt, sending the message that we must break the deadly silence about these forms of violence. This event is made possible trough a Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation Community Heroes grant. The students at Wiregrass Ranch High School want to break the silence and encourage students, faculty, and fans to speak out against power-based violence. Students from multiple high schools have created this campaign at their schools to bring awareness to power-based violence. Wiregrass Ranch High School is the first high school in Pasco County to hold a Get Loud! event.
Why is this Important?
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:
· 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.
· 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
· Only 36 percent of all sexual assault victims ever report the crime to the police.
· 1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked.
