Why: Ms. Erickson wants students to love being at school, to be excited and to look forward to their lessons, so she gives them as many hands-on learning experiences as possible.
How: The escape room lesson is an Indiana Jones-themed activity based on the achievements of the Ancient Egyptian civilization. Students work in groups and follow standards-based clues to unlock a series of boxes to escape the tomb. Using a 44-minute timer, students work collaboratively to answer questions/clues in order to complete a performance task to “Escape the Tomb.” Students will be given a short set of instructions via pre-recorded video to describe the performance task, and then will follow a set of clues related to the achievements of the Ancient Egyptian Civilization. The correct answer will allow the students to unlock a box that will include a new clue. Students who are able to answer all questions correctly and follow the clues will achieve success and will “Escape the Tomb.” Each team that participates earns school incentive “flight tickets” for working cooperatively and problem solving. The team with the fastest time will earn a “big” prize. For more information, contact Carolyn Erickson at 727-246-3200.
